‘Meals on Main Street’ volunteers are preparing for Thanksgiving by putting meals together for delivery.

Bill Cusano, of Meals on Main Street, says the organization served nearly 4,000 meals per month in March, but now it’s tripled.

“We have meals and groceries. They can just take a bag and go. We try to keep the interaction to a minimum,” says Cusano.

Due to coronavirus concerns, the local pantry was forced to shut down its soup kitchen. To keep interaction minimal, volunteers deliver food directly to community members.

“Our families get nervous when we go out, but it's such a good feeling to be able to help people that it's worth it," one volunteer told News 12.

The village is currently labeled an orange zone by Gov. Andrew Cuomo due to its sudden rise in COVID-19 cases.

Port Chester resident Yehermina Pasqual says although she isn’t celebrating the holiday, she is still thankful for the pantry’s food.

Meals on Main Street acquires most of its food from Feeding Westchester. 

“The need is so high right now,” says Karen Erren, CEO of Feeding Westchester. 

News 12 is told Feeding Westchester served 150,000 residents per month before the pandemic. Since then, it’s doubled to 300,000.

“What it tells me is these are people who have never had to ask for help before,” says Erren. “This is what we are here for, we are here to be your safety net.”
