Police: Tarps blew off Tappan Zee site
Debris recently been spotted in the Hudson River near the new Tappan Zee Bridge has been identified as tarps from the construction site.
Grand View-on-Hudson resident Tom Wolzien says he photographed huge pieces of debris floating away from the construction site on Sunday.
Wolzien says there were more than 25 pieces in the water. Some pieces were about 6 feet long, but Wolzien could not identify what exactly they were.
Kieran O'Leary, spokesperson for Westchester County Police Department, says the debris was plastic tarps that blew off some of the barges around the Tappan Zee Bridge during a thunderstorm. O'Leary says the County's Marine Unit wasn't needed to respond because the tarps had already been located and removed from the water.
In a statement, Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) confirms that work tarps were blown into the Hudson River due to wind gusts nearing 20 mph. "TZC crews responded immediately and safely retrieved the tarps. There was additional debris in the river near the project site that was not construction-related. This debris came down the river in the storm event over the weekend. Safety is our first priority and part of our safety plan requires that TZC crews man the site 24/7 in order to quickly respond to weather-related adjustments, such as this one, that may arise on site."
