Police are stepping up patrols at houses of worship as Muslims in the Hudson Valley observe Ramadan.

Ramadan officially starts Sunday night and it is considered to be the most sacred time for Muslims. Many people are expected to gather at the Islamic Center of New Rochelle to begin their worship.

But after recent deadly attacks at places of worship on important religious holidays, security is being increased at the mosque for Ramadan services.

Last month, over 200 people were killed in Sri Lanka as Christians gathered for Easter celebrations. And just over a week ago at a synagogue near San Diego, one person was killed and three others were injured after a gunman opened fire on the last day of Passover.

That is why the Muslim community in the Hudson Valley isn't taking chances.

Members say there will be extra security on hand throughout the entire month of Ramadan. They say they hope the increased security will allow them to observe in peace.
