Police seek ID of 2 suspected in ‘grandparent’ scam
Police in Sussex County are hoping that the public can help identify two women suspected to be involved in scamming some people in Florida.
Franklin Borough police say that the scam originated in Apollo Beach, Florida, on April 12, where a resident fell victim to a “grandparent scam.”
The scam involves the thief pretending to be a relative of the victim who says that they are in trouble and need the victim, usually a grandparent, to wire them money to be used for bail, attorney fees, etc.
Police say that the Apollo Beach resident was duped into believing that her grandson needed money for bail for a drug offense. The victim refused to give her debit card information over the phone, according to police, but agreed to purchase Walmart gift cards in the amount of $2,000.
Franklin Borough police say that law enforcement officers alerted them to the fact that the cards were used in the Walmart on Route 23 in Franklin Borough. Police were able to pull surveillance photos of the two women believed to have used the cards.
Police say that the suspects purchased a few cases of dried noodles similar to that of Ramen noodles, a case of toilet paper, and several hundred dollars of calling cards.
Anyone who may recognize the women is asked to contact the Franklin Borough Police Department at 973-827-7700.
