Police: New Rochelle among safest cities in country
New Rochelle is considered to be the 11th safest city of its size in the country, according to New Rochelle police.
Commissioner Patrick Carroll credits the record-low crime rate to technology, including cameras used to monitor suspicious activities. Those cameras led to an arrest of two Monroe College football players involved in a shooting last year.
Police say 47 of the cameras are placed at major intersections in the city, and they are hoping for a dozen more to further reduce crime.
The most recent numbers provided from the New Rochelle Police Department show there were 50,000 calls for help in 2014, with car thefts, robberies and burglaries all down.
Carroll says there are lower crime numbers despite the fact that budget issues have reduced the police department by 30 officers in three years.
Despite the seemingly good news, he says Internet crime, especially fraud, is a big problem that is not shown in the numbers.
