Police: New Hempstead home fills with smoke after man runs heating system

The cool weather prompted a scare for a homeowner in the Village of New Hempstead.
Ramapo police say the man ran his heating system for the first time Saturday night.
A short time later, his home started to fill up with smoke.
News 12 is told he evacuated his family and called 911.
Hillcrest Fire Department rushed to the scene to help air out the house.
Thankfully there wasn't a fire.
Police are now reminding residents to have their heating systems checked annually.
