Police nab suspect in Katonah jewelry store heist
Police arrested one of two suspects accused of robbing a Katonah jewelry store at gunpoint in broad daylight Wednesday.
Police received a call shortly before noon about two armed men who stormed into Katonah Jewelers at 57 Katonah Ave. According to authorities, the robbers threatened the three employees at the store, saying if they did not meet their demands, they would never see their children again.
Investigators say the robbers stripped the workers of their personal jewelry, took away their cell phones and tied them up with plastic tape. Owner Claudia Kable was on her way to work when the robbery took place. She says when she arrived at the store, her employees were shaken up and bruised.
Kable adds that the suspects stole thousands of dollars worth of gold rings and watches before fleeing the scene and running down Katonah Avenue. One of the employees eventually managed to stand up and set off an alarm.
A police helicopter was launched and a K-9 unit was brought in to track the suspects. Schools in the area were given extra police patrols during the pursuit.
One of the suspects was eventually taken into custody following a car accident in lower Manhattan. Police say the other robber is still at large.
