New Rochelle police descended on the city's train station to investigate reports of a man attempting to detonate a backpack Monday.
Police responded to the scene around 2:30 p.m. Monday after someone reported the man attempted to detonate a backpack that he was wearing. They say the nylon pouch also had several cigarette lighters attached.
Once on the scene, police approached the man, who allegedly stood up and extended his right arm to activate a small flashlight, turning it on and off several times.
Police say they found the man sitting on a bench wearing a pouch with wires coming out of it. Once taken into custody, the device was determined to be a Walkman wrapped in electrical tape.
The man, 54-year-old Thomas J. Skoup, was arrested and is charged with making a terroristic threat.
As police continue to investigate, they urge people who use public transportation to be vigilant.
