Police have identified the couple found passed out Monday in an apartment filled with natural gas in Orangeburg.
Guillermo Olea, 85, was found dead at the scene. His wife, Lena, was rushed to the hospital and has since been released.
The couple was found by their daughter early Monday morning.
Officials say the apartment smelled of gas, and that the stove had been left on but not lit.
Police are still waiting on autopsy results to determine the cause of death
Residents in the apartment building were evacuated. Orangeburg police say that if the couple had not been discovered, the gas-filled apartment could have been a disaster for the rest of the building.
While the exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation, police say it does not appear to be suspicious at this time.
