Police: Girl struck by car on way to school, hospitalized
Police are questioning a driver after he allegedly hit a girl who was running across the street to Rye Middle School Monday.
Witnesses say they heard a horn honk followed by the impact of the girl's body hitting a windshield at Boston Post and Old Post roads before school started. The victim's blood dotted the pavement and the driver's windshield was cracked.
The victim was taken to Westchester Medical Center with a broken leg and head injuries.
Police remained at the scene for several hours, closing off the road and redirecting traffic.Residents say they are shocked by the incident. "There's not a lot of cars here at all during the day," said Natalie Sluiter, of Rye. "I don't think it's a dangerous road at all."
The driver was being questioned by police, but there was no word on whether he would face charges.
