Police enter apartment, end hostage situation
A man accused of barricading himself and holding his girlfriend hostage inside a Yonkers apartment is now in police custody.
Police say a tense standoff began around 5:30 p.m. Monday at an apartment complex at 191 Park Ave. Probation officers say they wanted to contact the ex-girlfriend of parolee Lester Kidd, 40, of Yonkers. The officers say she had an order of protection in place against Kidd, and the officers were coming to question the woman to make sure Kidd had not violated the order.
Officials say arriving officers saw Kidd through the window and that he refused to open the door when they knocked. Since the girlfriend was also inside the apartment, the scene became a hostage situation.
Yonkers police had to evacuate the entire complex and cordoned off the area. The SWAT team was brought in, as well as hostage negotiators. Police forced their way through the front door at around 5 a.m. The 42-year-old woman ran out, and police arrested Kidd. Police tell News 12 that no one was injured during the ordeal and that Kidd did not have any weapons.
Kidd has been charged with criminal contempt in the first degree and unlawful imprisonment.
