Police dog training turned deadly when a Yonkers police officer opened fire, shooting and killing a dog from another department.
The dog, whose name was Max, was 2 years old. He had just graduated in March after 17 weeks of training with the Cooney Police Department. Max was near Sprain Ridge Park, working on more routine training when he was shot.
Yonkers Police Commissioner Edmund Hartnett says that the officer who shot Max felt that his life was in danger. ?If the officer felt the need to take this action, he felt, obviously, that he was at serious risk of injury,? Hartnett says.
The Yonkers Police Department says that the officer who shot Max is devastated. Max?s partner is also distraught.
Some officers are now questioning what happened, and say they are hesitant to work with the shooter in the future.
?It?s a sad day for them, it?s a sad day for the Yonkers Police Department,? Hartnett says.
Yonkers police will not be investigating the incident, but a representative from Lehman College says they will look into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
