Police: Couple assaults blind bell ringer
Two people have been charged after police say they assaulted a legally blind Salvation Army bell ringer.
Police say Juan Rodriguez, 30, of Valhalla, and Audrianna Wignal, 21, of Mount Vernon, attacked the man inside the Smash Burger restaurant in White Plains. The two were charged with felony assault after police say they beat and kicked 41-year-old Jermaine Simmons.
They claimed the victim cut in front of them at the restaurant. Eyewitnesses say Rodriguez repeatedly punched and kicked the victim, knocking him to the floor. They say Wignal also kicked the victim while he was down.
Simmons, who suffered a broken orbital bone and a broken nose, returned to work today to continue raising money for those in need.
Both Rodriguez, on parole for a prior violent assault conviction, and Wignal, who also has prior arrests including assault, are being charged with felony assault.
