Police: Cabbie killed over a couple of dollars
A livery cab driver was shot in the head and killed in Yonkers early Sunday morning, marking the fourth fatal cabbie shooting in the New York City area in as many months.
Police say the shooting took place during a botched robbery over a couple of dollars.
Yonkers police Capt. William Cave says his department is consulting with the NYPD to determine whether the shootings could be linked.
Pericles Salas was found unconscious and slumped over in the front seat of his vehicle in the middle of Jessamine Avenue. The 32-year-old was a driver for Mexicana Taxi Service in Yonkers. He was shot once in the back of the head and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Two other cabbies were killed in the last two weeks in the Bronx. A third was killed about four months ago, also in the Bronx. Two of those cases led to arrests.
The New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers is pressing for more police focus on protecting cabbies.
