More than 100 heavily armed police officers moved in what they considered to be a gang of violent drug dealers in Mount Vernon.
The Mount Vernon police commissioner says residents in Mount Vernon Heights were literally living under the gun. Thursday, officers from Mount Vernon, county police and state police flooded the block near Columbus Avenue and Millington Street. Officials say several search warrants were executed against people described as known drug dealers trafficking in crack and powdered cocaine.
Five people were arrested and police recovered both drugs and weapons. Police say those arrested could be facing significant jail time. For now, the neighbors say they are breathing a little easier.
