At least four Rockland County businesses dealt with a bomb threat sent via email Thursday, according to police.
A BMW dealership in Spring Valley, a Jawonio facility in New Square, St. Aidan's Church in Pearl River and a building at 4 Executive Blvd. were confirmed by police to have received threats.
Police say an email that was circulated contained a bomb threat demanding $20,000 in bitcoin payment. The threat was sent to many locations nationwide as well, including locations in Brooklyn and New Jersey.
The general manager at World Wide BMW in Spring Valley says the email began telling an employee that a bomb was hidden inside the dealership and a man was ready to detonate it at any moment.
The email also threatened that if there was any sort of panic or police were called, the device would blow up.
"We're a company that worries about our employees, worries about our customers, the safety of our employees, the safety of our customers. So I said we have to call the authorities," says World Wide BMW GM Michael Mastangelo.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office also confirmed at least 2 locations received threats in the county. Middletown police responded to a threat at the Mental Health Association of Orange County.
A threat was also sent to How Sweet It Is Candy in Yonkers. The owner says McLean Avenue was shut down while police assessed the situation.
"Usually stuff like that I just dismiss, but in these days and times you can't," says How Sweet It Is owner Aurea Roman. So I called up (the) Yonkers Police Department and they took it very seriously."
Port Jervis Middle School also faced a threat.
The NYPD has said the threats are not considered credible, and instead were meant to cause disruption
