Police say speed was a factor in the crash that killed two brothers in New Hyde Park Friday morning.
Officials say the driver, 26-year-old Djeffry Louis, was traveling eastbound around 2:30 a.m. on the Northern State Parkway. They say he was speeding as he exited the ramp to New Hyde Park Road and lost control.
The vehicle went through some trees, across a parking lot and slammed into a medical office building. First responders say there wasn't much left of the blue Nissan Sentra following the wreck.
Djeffry Louis and his brother, 21-year-old Jonathan Louis, both of Rosedale, Queens, were killed.
Firefighters say another car crashed into the building the same way last year.
They say they hope the Department of Transportation can install some sort of barrier or guard rail on the exit ramp to prevent future accidents. When asked about that possibility, the state DOT said in a statement that it is awaiting the results of the police investigation and will "evaluate further steps after that."
The brothers' friend Sean Luke struggled to come to the scene of the accident Friday.
"He's been my best friend since forever, So this is crazy, it's crazy," says Luke. "You wouldn't see one without the other ... it's almost like God wanted them together."
State police are asking anyone who may have seen the crash to call (631) 756-3300.
