Police: 1 motorcyclist killed in I-87 crash in Yonkers
One motorcyclist has been killed following a crash on the New York Thruway.
The accident happened just before 2 a.m. on the southbound side of I-87 in Yonkers, near the Bronx border.
According to state police, a 22-year-old man from the Bronx was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control going around a curve, struck the left concrete barrier and was thrown from his motorcycle. The 2001 Kawasaki motorcycle continued going for about 1/10 of mile before it burst into flames.
The rider was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released yet.
A section of the road was closed for several hours while police investigated the accident and questioned a group of people who were riding motorcycles with the victim.
People who live in the area tell News 12 they not surprised by the fatal accident on I-87. They say dozens of motorcyclists can often be heard going at high rates of speed, usually late at night. "When they go by my house they're doing 130, [on] Tuckahoe Road 160 [and] by Cross County they're doing over 180 mph," says Jimmy Nolan, of Yonkers.
