Some parents and leaders in Pleasantville say they want village businesses to have the option to opt out if Gov. Andrew Cuomo legalizes marijuana sales.

Last month, Cuomo announced his intention to legalize pot within 100 days. At a village meeting last month, residents discussed a resolution that would allow Pleasantville to opt out of the law that would allow businesses to sell marijuana.

“The law as currently contained in the budget is one size fits all, and we are 1.6 square miles,” says parent John Mueller. “There is nowhere for us to put it where it’s not going to be in the sightline of kids.”

Parents like Mueller are concerned that marijuana, like cigarettes, will be marketed to children. Cuomo has estimated legalization of the drug will bring in about $300 million in tax revenue by 2023.

The board is expected to vote Monday night on a resolution that would allow individual businesses to opt out of selling marijuana. The board will also vote on a date for a public meeting about a proposed local law that would prohibit any area business from selling the substance.
