The state Board of Education released its list of private schools in Rockland County that flunked their fire safety reports.

The number of Jewish schools dropped 60 percent from last year, but out of the 24 remaining, 17 are repeat offenders.

For the first time, five parochial schools also made the list.

Sister Pat Howell, principal of St. Anthony School, was shocked when News 12 told her that the school was on the list.

"When they came, they found a couple of things we took care of it," she said. "As far as I knew, we were good."

Congregation Birchos Yosef is also new to the list, but Rabbi Cheskel Weiss says the yeshiva doesn't belong there.

He insisted that the school was compliant and added that safety is the most important thing.

A prominent rabbi in Rockland told News 12 over the phone on Wednesday that out of those 17 repeat offenders, two of the schools are closed and a majority of the others have or are in the process of filing their compliance paperwork with New York state.
