Playing With Fire: Lawmakers take action on school safety
Lawmakers from Washington, D.C. to Albany took action this week after a five-month News 12 investigation uncovered a dangerous breakdown of public safety in local private schools.
Last month, News 12 discovered a shocking number of non-public schools that are failing to keep children safe, including fire code violations and insufficient enforcement in Rockland County.
State Sen. David Carlucci says he is outraged at the substandard conditions, all at religious yeshivas. News 12 reported that many of the state-required safety reports are missing, outdated, incomplete or expired.
Last week, the Democrat introduced a bill that calls on the state education commissioner to revoke the registration of non-compliant schools, or at the very least, strip them of their funding.

The senator's bill is likely to face opposition in the Republican-led state Senate.
After News 12's investigation, state Education Commissioner Mary Ellen Elia sent out a letter to all non-public schools in Rockland to remind them of their compliance requirements. News 12 has been told a list of delinquent schools will soon be made public.
