Bedford Hills is finally ready to replace their current septic system with a new sewer system.
The town currently has a "failing septic system," which can lead to polluted water supplies. This has forced several local business owners to outsource work.
Bedford Hills Town Supervisor Chris Burdick says the town is now going to hire an engineering firm to design a new sewer system. He says the project will take about a year to build.
Property owners in the sewer district have already approved the plan by a vote, according to Burdick.
"I am thrilled this is going forward and it's a 100 years in the making," Burdick said.
The new sewer system will not only benefit stores in the area but also is expected to bring in more shops and restaurants to the town.
Westchester County and the New York City Department of Environment Protection is covering a majority of the $20 million project, but the town will still owe about $1 million.
