Plan may ax property taxes for some seniors
In an effort to ease the burden of high property taxes, senior citizens in Greenburgh will be given the option to do volunteer work in return for a tax credit.
The proposal that Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner is pushing has already been implemented in 125 communities across the country, including Boston and Boulder. The plan has received positive responses from senior citizens in those cities, but local residents like Emily Garnett won?t be coming out of retirement even if it means getting help for her high property taxes.
?I've worked all these years,? said Garnett. ?I'm 71 years old and I don't want to work anymore.?
Property taxes in Westchester rank as the third-highest in the country, forcing some senior citizens to relocate.
The proposal was actually passed in Albany two years ago, but was never signed before then-Gov. George Pataki left office. Supervisor Feiner has recently asked Governor Spitzer to make it official by signing it into law.
