Officials in Piermont have decided to close the village's pier to cars for a handful of days this summer.

Village officials had wanted to close Ferry Road for about 10 weekends, or 21 days this summer, so that people could enjoy the walk without all the car traffic.

The proposal was met with lots of resistance by fisherman who said they needed to drive to the end of the pier to transport their gear.

Many argued that they had also paid for parking passes that should allow them to park at the end whenever they want.

Piermont Mayor Bruce Tucker said car traffic on the pier increased significantly for the last several summers and that the proposal to close it down for 21 days was about protecting pedestrian safety, not limiting fisherman's access.

Officials reached a compromise to close the pier for 15 Sundays this summer instead of 21 weekend days total.

The Sunday closure will start Memorial Day weekend and run to Labor Day weekend. During that time, the mayor said people can still fish, but they just have to walk their gear out there.
