Pelham police say they may be close to making some arrests after a rash of mail thefts in the village.
Detective John Hynes, of the Pelham Police Department, says they have about 20 current cases involving people whose checks were stolen from mailboxes.
On its Facebook page, Pelham police report that a mail carrier was fired for giving her mailbox keys to a non-postal worker in order to steal mail from mailboxes. The keys fit all mailboxes in Pelham, New Rochelle and Larchmont.
That mail carrier is now being investigated by postal police.
Police are also investigating several people who made deposits with the stolen checks.
In an effort to prevent mail fraud, newer mailboxes contain a tiny slot for people to slip their mail through instead of the old drop-down lever.
