A teenage girl was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday for killing her boyfriend after he broke up with her.
LaTonya Fisher, 16, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in June for stabbing Justin Woodward, 17, and then waiting for more than an hour before calling for help as he bled to death.
The incident happened in Fisher?s Bohemian Towers apartment in January, when Woodward came to break off their relationship.
Following the sentencing, Fisher?s mother says her daughter has accepted responsibility for the crime.
?I love my daughter and I love Justin too, and I pray that she gets the help she needs and the community heals from this,? says the teen?s mother, Janet Fisher.
However, the victim's mother, Deborah Alston, insists that 10 years behind bars is not enough.
?How can 10 years help me grieve my baby's life?? Alston says. ?I feel like his life to the court system was worth nothing.?
When delivering the verdict, the preceding judge said he had taken into consideration that Fisher was abused by a stepfather and was a victim of gang assault.
