Some homeowners and business owners in Peekskill say they're against the possibility of a homeless shelter coming to their neighborhood.
Jan Peek Shelter for the Homeless has been located on North Water Street for decades. It's seeking a new location as the current building is in foreclosure.
Board members are now considering a site on Washington Street, which is next to homes and businesses.
People in the area say they are against the homeless shelter coming to their community.
"It's not good for residents," said business owner Brian Dee. "It's going to hurt property values -- it's going to scare people away from coming to this area."
Homeowners say they would like them to choose a location out of residents' way to ensure safety in the area.
Board member Jan Nunley says the site is not set in stone and a move wouldn't happen for at least two years.
"We're doing the best we can to find a place that's acceptable for our needs and for the community," Nunley says.
Peekskill Mayor Andrew Rainey says the site is not confirmed and there will be public hearings before a final decision is made. He says the funding for the facility will come from the county's budget.
