A group that aims to end veteran homelessness in Westchester held a barbecue in Hartsdale Sunday.

Patriot Housing Initiative says it has helped more than 168 veterans find homes since it was founded last August. The coalition of non-profit organizations in Westchester works with the county, police and local shelters to find homeless veterans housing and jobs.

They offer peer support, one-on-one counseling and provide hope for veterans who are in need of help.

"We're not just giving them homes, we're giving them a life back," said Karl Bertrand, of Patriot Housing.

Bertrand says the group set out with the goal of eventually ending veteran homelessness in the county, and he thinks they are close. He says by their count, there are currently three homeless veterans living on the streets and six in county shelters. Betrand hopes to eliminate veteran homelessness by next year.

More than 100 veterans attended the barbecue at Ridge Road Park.
