The Lakeland Central School District is warning parents about a level-3 sex offender that recently moved across the street from an elementary school.
Derrick Albert, 34, served six years in prison for raping a 16-year-old girl in 1990. Albert is currently listed as ?high-risk? on the state?s sex offender registry. Parents received a letter from the school district notifying them that Albert moved across the street from the George Washington Elementary School in Mohegan Lake. Under New York state law, sex offenders on parole cannot live within 1,000 feet of a school. However, Albert completed his parole seven years ago, so legally he is able to live anywhere.
