Parents of a Bronx boy who swam in the ocean at Orchard Beach say their son has sea lice, causing itchy, red bumps all over his body.
The city health department says sea lice are jelly fish larvae with stinging cells that get trapped under the bathing suit or hair of a swimmer, irritating the skin. Health department officials say inspectors have checked the water quality at Orchard Beach each week since May.
The boy's father, Robert Silvestri, says he called 311 to file a complaint about the sea lice. Beachgoers said they wished they had been warned of the possibility of sea lice.
