Dozens of Ossining residents rallied Saturday against President Donald Trump's decision to end DACA.
As News 12 has reported, about 800,000 immigrants are currently protected from deportation by temporary work permits granted by the Obama-era program. But President Trump has said he will phase out the policy, and he has given Congress six months to act before it ends.
DACA recipient Jennifer Bravo Fajardo, of Ossining, started college last week and is worried she may never get her degree because her DACA permit expires in May 2019.
Westchester County Legislator Catherine Borgia helped the county board pass the Immigration Protection Act, but the legislation that would protect the rights of immigrants in Westchester was vetoed.
Borgia says she's now working to sway one of five county legislators who voted against the legislation.
"We are working hard on all of them," Borgia said. "You know there are several legislators who represent minority districts."
Advocates of the legislation are pushing congress to pass the Dream Act so people like Bravo Fajardo can stay in the country.
Neighbors Link is hosting a DACA information session next Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Ossining Library.
