Orangeburg worker diagnosed with Legionnaires'
An employee of Chromalloy Gas Turbine Corporation in Orangeburg has been diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease, the company says.
Cathy Gedvilas, the director of corporate communications for Chromalloy, says it is unclear whether the employee was exposed to the bacterium at the facility.
The facility's manager sent all employees home early Friday as a precaution, and the area around the cooling towers was quarantined.
Crews injected biocide into the facility's cooling towers Friday night to kill any legionella bacteria present.
The Rockland County Health Department stopped by Chromalloy on Friday and is monitoring the situation.
Senior employees returned to the facility Saturday for an emergency briefing, according to a Chromalloy supervisor.
Gedvilas says further testing on the cooling towers will be conducted Monday before officials decidE if further action is necessary. OSHA inspectors will also visit the site.
The infected employee's identity has not been released, nor did the company offer an update on his or her condition.
A Legionnaires' outbreak in the Bronx has claimed the lives of 10 people, and more than 100 additional cases have been reported.
