Orange County tests for possible swine flu
The Orange County Health Department has confirmed to News 12 that it is testing two people Monday for possible swine flu.
In Westchester, a school in Rye is closed Monday after students and staff fell ill with flu-like symptoms last week. The Rye School of Leadership sent a notice to parents about the illnesses. While none of the cases were confirmed to be swine flu, the school closed so crews could disinfect the building. The school is located on the same property as Midland Elementary School, which remains open. Some parents say they?re taking that as a good sign.
In addition to disinfecting the building, school administrators say they will continue to monitor and assess the illness by following up with students and staff members.
There are 28 confirmed cases of swine flu at St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens. The school is closed through Tuesday as crews disinfect the building.
In total, there are at least 50 cases of swine flu that have been confirmed in the United States, according to the Associated Press. Symptoms of the swine flu include a high fever, body aches, coughing and sore throat.
In Mexico, the outbreak's epicenter, soldiers handed out six million facemasks to help stop the spread of the virus that is suspected in up to 103 deaths in that country. Spain reported its first confirmed swine flu case on Monday and said another 17 people were suspected of having the disease. The European Union health commissioner advised Europeans to avoid nonessential travel to Mexico and the United States.
Rye School of Leadership is expected to reopen Tuesday.
