10h agoA Cornwall-on-Hudson kindergarten teacher was nominated by her students to appear on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."
The appearance comes after a student’s mother wrote to the show for Ellen’s ‘Month of Giving.’ In the letter, teacher Melissa Stewart is described as a “true hero.”
“During the spring, I went to their homes to read to them, blow bubbles and play with chalk and talk to them to let them know everything’s OK,” says Stewart.
Her acts of selfless giving is what landed her a flight to Los Angeles to appear on the popular talk show.
Stewart tells News 12 the experience was unforgettable, saying in part, “It was amazing…I was completely shocked. I had no idea what was happening was happening!”
News 12's Blaise Gomez caught up with the kindergarten teacher and the mother-daughter duo who helped nominate her. The student donned a shirt that read "Ms. Stewart – I love you!”
Stewart also received $15,000 from Shutterfly, 50 Chromebooks for her students and her student loans paid for by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."
