For the first time, sheriff's deputies in Orange County now have their own firing range.
The outdoor range, located off Route 17M in New Hampton, will serve hundreds of deputies who previously had to wait for practice time at other area ranges. The Orange County sheriff says the new facility will not only improve deputy training, but will also generate revenue when other departments use the practice range.
"We'll have first preference. We'll be able to get all our people trained and we're also going to open it up to other police agencies," says Sheriff Carl DuBois. "I know some federal agencies might be interested in it."
The range is built on landfill property and may eventually expand to include an indoor range and training building.
