Authorities and forecasters are warning of possible flooding across the Hudson Valley this weekend as forecasts of warmth and rainfall will not only add precipitation but also melt the snow on the ground.
The National Weather Service has issued flood watches for Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties until Saturday morning.
Rain and snowmelt can significantly impact the Hutchinson River, Saw Mill River and Bronx River parkways. There are often shutdowns on those roads during heavy rains.
DPW crews have been working to clear snow and ice as well as clear catch basins for better drainage.
Victoria Lepore, who lives along the Saw Mill River, says her basement had already flooded by Friday afternoon. She is among a number of Yonkers residents who took advantage of free sandbags from the city's Department of Public Works. Crews were handing them out to residents who live in low-lying areas.
The sandbags are available to any homeowner who may need them at the Yonkers Organic Waste Yard on Nepperhan Avenue.
Those who are planning on going on the roads should be prepared for issues, according to officials. They are also advised to use extreme caution.
