Officials: Firefighters sickened by sewage smell
A half-dozen Mount Vernon firefighters were rushed to the hospital Monday night after conditions at a firehouse made them sick.
City officials believe it was a backed sewage system in the basement causing the problem.
Deputy Fire Commissioner Ernie Richardson says the pipes backed up, and for hours firefighters were exposed to the smell of raw sewage coming from the basement.
For the short term, the firefighters stationed there will be reassigned to a nearby firehouse.
The firehouse will be aired out, and crews have been called to fix the problem. Officials are hoping it will be safe for firefighters to work on Wednesday.
They say all of the firefighters were treated and released from the hospital.
