Recent samples taken from Silver Stream in Newburgh show high levels of cancer-causing chemicals.
The city of Newburgh says the chemicals leaked from Stewart International Airport.
About two weeks ago, an equipment malfunction at Stewart caused firefighting foam to be released.
The city of Newburgh immediately took samples from a nearby tributary and Silver Stream. The results that came in last week show PFOA and PFOS chemical levels 15 times higher than the legal health standard.
This comes as the city continues to study and monitor contamination at Washington Lake discovered in 2016.
Some say the recent find of contamination shows the city needs to find a reliable and safe source for drinking water.
The city is temporarily drawing drinking water from nearby Browns Pond. The state DEC is now monitoring the situation, and according to the city, an environmental contractor is working to clean up the contamination.
Officials say it's not impacted by the recent spill, and that the water is safe to drink.
