Not enough kids are using the resources available to them when it comes to bullying in schools, Bronx officials say.
According to the city’s Department of Education, 82 percent of students surveyed say their peers have harassed, bullied or intimidated others at school last year. Officials say new legislation aims to lower that number.
The bill being pushed by Councilmen Ritchie Torres and Rafael Salamanca Jr. would require the city to connect students in the public school system to anti-bullying resources.
Those resources include a web portal where reports of bullying can be anonymously made and a hotline for anonymous counseling.
One year ago, police say Abel Cedeno stabbed Matthew McCree to death inside their Urban Assembly classroom in the Bronx. Cedeno's attorney says he was bullied for years.
