A Newburgh house fire left a 2-year-old dead and a home destroyed Friday morning, according to authorities.
Firefighters arrived at the two-story Coach Lane home around 4:15 a.m.
A neighbor told News 12 that he and several police officers went inside to rescue the occupants. He said he helped a man escape by smashing through a storm window with a sledgehammer.
"We tried to pull him out, and we eventually got him," said Russell Crawford, the neighbor. "He was really cut up. The smoke was so intense."
Police say more than a dozen people were inside the house at time of the fire, but it was not immediately clear how many actually lived there. The injured, including first responders and a woman believed to be the child's mother, were transported to St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital.
James Nenni, of the Newburgh Police Department, said the woman was in critical condition.
Several firefighters and police officers were treated for minor injuries and released.
