Officials: 18 rounded up in heroin bust
Eighteen suspected heroin dealers were rounded up following a yearlong heroin investigation in Westchester County.
Local, state and federal authorities gathered at the Westchester County District Attorney's Office in White Plains Thursday morning to announce the arrest of the street-level dealers in the town of Greenburgh and the city of White Plains.
As part of the sting, investigators seized heroin with a street value of $1.5 million, over $100,000 in cash and two loaded handguns.
Willie James Edwards, 51, and Otto Armstrong Sr., 60, both from White Plains, were two of the alleged dealers arrested.
Greenburgh authorities say Virginia Road Elementary School teacher Gjon Krasnici was arrested nearly two weeks ago after allegedly buying about eight decks of heroin from Armstrong.
"With the cooperation of the DA's office, Mr. Krasnici was arrested shortly after purchasing narcotics from Mr. Otto Armstrong in the city of Greenburgh," says Greenburgh Police Chief Christopher McNerney.
Authorities say the investigation began last summer after a series of heroin overdoses in the White Plains area. The FBI was part of the investigation.
Authorities say the heroin deals were often made in cars at various locations in White Plains and Greenburgh, and even at a local library.
