An off-duty police officer came to the aid of a woman after her car fell into a ravine Wednesday.

Ossining Police Officer Ryan Tomkins says he was coming back from a haircut before work and driving along Route 9A South Wednesday morning and noticed a frantic woman on the phone on the side of the road. 

Tomkins said he crossed four lanes of traffic and saw that an SUV had fallen into a ravine. He says the driver somehow lost control of her SUV, slamming into the guardrail and plummeting roughly 10 feet into the ravine.

"I hopped up from here, onto the driver's side door. I had to open up the door, climb through the car to get to the passenger side and that's when I lifted her up to undo the seat belt,” he says.

The woman inside the car, 75-year-old Carol Klein, of Croton, remains in the hospital. Her husband told News 12 that she has some bruises but is OK. He says she was heading to visit a friend for the holidays and that her car was packed with presents when the accident happened.

Tomkins, 26, has been on the force for two years and volunteers at Sleepy Hollow High School as a wrestling coach.
