Off-duty firefighter makes heroic water rescue
A woman is lucky to be alive, thanks to the heroic efforts of an off-duty firefighter who rescued her after her car plunged into the Bronx River in Eastchester Tuesday.
Off-duty Eastchester firefighter Joe Iamonico was walking his dog on a path along the Bronx River when he saw an SUV hit a guardrail on the northbound side of the Bronx River Parkway and skid off the road.
Iamonico immediately called 911 and jumped into the cold water. He says the driver was climbing onto the roof of her car when he reached her. The driver was taken to the hospital and is expected to be fine. Iamonico says he was glad he was in the right place at the right time.
Investigators say the accident was most likely caused by slick roads and speed. To view an interview with Iamonico, go to channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and click on iO Extra.
