Nyack school officials held their first regular Board of Education meeting with Dr. Lizzette Ruiz-Giovinazzi serving as the district's acting superintendent.

The assistant superintendent is serving as the acting superintendent in light of Susan Yom's resignation.

Yom was named the district's top administrator in December 2022 and officially left her role on June 30.

Her departure from the district comes months after teachers walked out of a school board meeting and unions took a vote of "no confidence" in her due to concerns about her decision making and alleged interactions with the staff.

While a letter to district parents said the board is actively working on a plan for this transition process, Michael Belotti, an attendee at the meeting, shared what qualifications he believes makes for a good superintendent.

"Well, fiscally responsible and is good to the teachers, and most of all, what's best for the students," Belotti said.

As the board headed into a second executive session, News 12 caught up with Ruiz-Giovinazzi to learn if she will be acting superintendent when the school year starts.

"So, I think that's one of the things that the board is going to be discussing, and so I'm not sure. I'm just happy to be here right now and continuing to support the district," Ruiz-Giovinazzi said.

One board member thanked her for stepping in to lead the district during this transitional period.

This is the second time in two years that the district has had to deal with a superintendent resignation, leaving one parent News 12 spoke with concerned about the district's hiring practices.

Another woman spoke to News 12 off-camera and said she has questions about the district's hiring process now that they have had at least two superintendent resignations in the last two years.
