Organizers say the New York International Air Show will be held as planned this weekend, as long as the weather permits.
This year's event is scheduled to be held 'drive-in style' on Saturday and Sunday at the Orange County Airport. News 12 is told the airport didn’t suffer any real damage in Thursday's storms.
Pilots hit the skies on Friday as they went through test runs of the upcoming show.
Representatives say they are keeping their eyes on the sky because any major bad weather could delay or postpone the show. There's a chance for rain and storms on Saturday as the remnants of Hurricane Laura sweep through the region.
Area businesses have been looking forward to the event, hoping it would bring in more customers and sales during the pandemic.
"We're able to provide an entertainment outlet, you know, let's be honest, we're all starved for that right now. Having been cooped up for a number of months but with this terrible pandemic. The fact that this should help the economic engine if you will I think that's very important,” says spokesperson Chris Dirato, of the New York International Air Show.
The latest unemployment rate for Orange County is at nearly 14%, leaving organizers hoping for the economic boost from the show.
