NRC inspectors meet to discuss Indian Point fire
Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspectors met at the Westchester Marriot Wednesday in an attempt to figure out what caused the transformer explosion and fire at Indian Point in early May.
The flames at the Buchanan power plant set off the sprinkler system, which then caused water to leak into an electrical supply room. If the water had gotten deep enough in that room to start affecting the electrical equipment, it would have shorted out the power to the safety systems in the plant. That would complicate things for the operators to get the plant into a shutdown condition.
However, Indian Point's operator told NRC officials that everything worked the way it was supposed to, saying the fire triggered an automatic shutdown of the reactor without complications.
Opponents and supporters of Indian Point also attended the meeting to have their voices heard. While those in favor of Indian Point say it's a great place to work, critics say the latest incident is just another reason why the power plant should be shut down.
Inspectors from the NRC are also questioning why water leaked into that room in the first place.
