Teens in Norwalk spent their Saturday learning about food insecurity in Fairfield County.

Religious leaders from St. Phillips Church say it is important to educate students about poverty at a young age, so they can learn to give back throughout their lives.

This year marks the 16th year in a row that the church is a holding a themed service day – this year's theme being food insecurity.

Organizers say the purpose of the Foodfast – Be the Change event is to raise awareness and money for eradication of world hunger.

Over 50 teens were able to participate in the event thanks to the church's partnership with Person 2 Person, a community-supported agency that provides emergency assistance for basic needs, and support for individuals and families as they move toward stability.

Attendees learned about the nonprofit services and the ways they can get involved. They also learned about the hunger that can be found right in their own neighborhoods.

Participating students were also invited to take part in service activities throughout the county.
