Norwalk officials are looking to crack down on illegal dumping in the city with a new surveillance program.
Despite clearly posted signage and the risk of a hefty fine, residents on Gray Rock Road say part of their street is still constantly littered with everything from household trash to larger items like filing cabinets.
Norwalk police say in less than a month since the city installed a security camera there, four people have been ticketed after being caught on tape dropping off their trash. They say more citations are coming.
The total fine for dumping in the city limits comes to $219 per incident.
Police say they take the issue seriously.
"It's certainly a quality-of-life issue," says Police Lt. Terry Blake. "It creates an ugly appearance for sure, it brings rodents and such to the area."
Police say there are plans to bring cameras to other illegal dumping hot spots.
