North Brothers Island reopening explored
City lawmakers are exploring the possibility of reopening North Brothers Island.
The land used to house Riverside Hospital and a rehabilitation facility. It is currently overgrown and, according to Bronx Councilman Andrew Cohen, quite dangerous.
"These buildings are in very bad shape...but still, we think it is worth exploring. [The] success of Governors Island has given inspiration here," Cohen told News 12.
City Council members were taken on a tour of the island last week.
Riverside Hospital was used to quarantine "Typhoid Mary," who was believed to cause several outbreaks of typhoid fever in the early 1900s.
The island is currently a bird sanctuary and owned by the Parks Department.
