A local nonprofit that serves people with disabilities is making a renewed push to raise money for a capital campaign.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jawonio officials were left dealing with additional expenses, as well their fundraiser coming to a complete standstill.
The organization serves about 3,000 individuals and offers services from housing to health care.
Jawonio CEO Jill Warner says there has been a “significant financial fallout" and that it includes $70,000 per month for PPE, $450,000 in additional pay for essential staff and halting their fundraiser.
“We actually closed a majority of our foundation and only kept on a part-time grant writer,” says Warner.
The campaign will fund a new building that will replace the nonprofits 1950’s original structure packed with trailers. The prospective space will house staff training, mental health and day services, and an outpatient physical therapy clinic.
The capital project is currently $3 million short of its goal. “We're hoping that we will be able to meet our goal through the generosity of the community. People don't realize $5, $10, $15, it adds up,” says Warner.
